Chapter 6

I suggested that Drew and I hold our next therapy session outside. Maybe being outdoors would lift his spirits...and mine. The sun was hidden behind a bank of clouds, making the air cooler than usual for this time of day. Jagged cliffs were shrouded in a purple haze. That same shade was reflected in the surface of the water, above which a seagull swooped across the deep blue sky.

I wrapped my jacket around me as we walked along the moisture-packed sand.

Drew shoved his hands in his pockets and slanted me a look. “I want to thank you for what you’ve done for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt like I’ve had a friend.”

I smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “I’m glad the therapy is helping.”

“I don’t mean in a professional sense. I like you, Lily. I haven’t met anyone who made me feel so… I don’t know…so safe…so cared for.”

Dread settled in my gut. “Drew, I—”

“Let me finish. No one has ever made me feel that I matter. That my opinions matter, you know? Even Melanie. She wasn’t all that interested in my wants. My needs. I know you’re paid to help me. But I can also tell that you truly care.”

“I do care. I want to see you better. That’s why it’s important that you share your past with me. Share the experiences that brought you where you are today.” After pausing a moment to let my words register, I said, “Are you ready to tell me why you tried to take your own life?”

He halted and stared down at me. “Just for today, can we put all that out of our minds? Can we let this therapy session be about just letting go? Relaxing and forgetting all the bad, just for a little while?”

Unable to resist his cajoling, I relented. “Sure. I could use some of that myself.”

A relieved smile lit his face. “Hey, I know what you’d like. Come on.”

I didn’t protest when he took my hand and led me farther down the beach. We stopped at a small cove where a rowboat bobbed in the water. “Want to take her out?”

I raised my brows. “You’re kidding, right? That little thing? In the sea?”

“Of course. We won’t go very far out. It’s safe, I promise.”

I frowned up at the sky. “It looks like it might storm.”

“Nah. If it starts, we’ll come back right away.”

Since the ferry ride, I’d wanted to be back on the water. But, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. I was thinking something bigger, more sturdy. I nibbled at my bottom lip. Drew looked so eager, I couldn’t disappoint him. “Sure.” I shrugged. “Why not.”

Drew helped me inside, then took the oars, steering us away from the beach. His hair whipped around his forehead, and his eyes sparkled, making him look like a child on Christmas morning. I hadn’t seen such happiness, such relaxation in his expression since I’d met him. Maybe putting off the therapy session was exactly what he needed.
